The time has come for Jesus to depart the world via the crucifixion and what takes place in these final hours is intense on every level. The disciples are instructed to prepare the Passover and in doing so they will find a man carrying a water jug on his head as means of identifying who it is they are to meet to make these preparations. Over these next hours, the disciples will be shocked when they hear that one of the disciples will betray Jesus. They question whether they are the one who will do this. Jesus identifies Judas as the one who will betray Him but the other disciples remain unaware. Jesus will wash the feet of the disciples and then give in-depth teaching followed by His prayer (John 17).
The Passover Meal
The devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus. As Jesus eats this meal with His disciples, He begins to teach about the New Covenant in His blood. That the blood of Jesus will be poured out for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus knows that He is about to die, that He like the Passover lamb, whose blood was applied to the houses of the Israelites in Egypt, to protect them from God’s judgement upon the Egyptians. He will be sacrificed and His shed blood will make atonement for sin.
When Jesus rose from supper
At the trial of Jesus, Pilate washes his hands of Jesus as if to say that the blood of Jesus is not on his hands. Whereas, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, fulfilling the will of God by serving God in laying down his life. The lesson is, that we come to share in God only through being made clean by Christ. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse us from sin but the point is made with the foot washing, only Christ can do this for us.
Lord, where are you going?
Jesus tells His followers that they cannot follow Him to the place where He is going, but afterward they can follow. He tells His disciples to not let their hearts be troubled, they are to believe in God and also in Him, for He is going to prepare a place from them. Often, this is thought of as Jesus preparing a room for his disciples to occupy when they are in heaven, but clearly Jesus is speaking of the cross. Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. The way that we get to belong to Jesus is through His sacrifice on the cross and so we can be where He is only in this way.
Jesus promises His disciples that He will send the Holy Spirit to them as the comforter, He will convict the world of sin, righteousness and the judgement of God to come. Therefore, the disciples are not to let their hearts be troubled and He continues to teach His disciples about the true vine and vine branches. How we will bring glory to God by our lives producing spiritual fruit to the glory of God. The disciples must remember that Jesus has overcome the world and even though it all looks as if everything is falling apart, Judas will betray Jesus, Peter will deny and they all will be scattered. Everything is according to plan, God’s plan.
